Mason Galima helped Hilo get off to a good start at the Little League district championships on Friday.

In the first day of the Majors (ages 11-12) or Little League double-elimination tournament at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau, Galima was the winning pitcher in Hilo’s 7-1 victory over Ka‘u.

Galima also had two hits to lead Hilo’s offense. Bryant Respicio added a double.

Jociyah Mukini took the loss.

Hilo plays North Hawaii at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kamehameha Park.

Ka‘u will play the loser on Sunday in the three-team tournament.

The district champion will advance to states, scheduled for July 25-28 in Waimea.

In 2008, Waipio, Waipahu was the last team from Hawaii to win the Little League World Series, which is held in Williamsport, Pa., and televised on ABC.

The last Little League team from Hilo to capture a World Series title was the Kaha Wong coached Seniors (ages 14-16) in 2011.

Tiera Arakawa scored twice for Maui, and Sabrina Scott got the other goal.
